This is an EP. I chose the name 'Blood And Glass' because of the juxtaposition of warm, organic blood-like sounds (strings, voice, live meaty drums) and cold, breakable man-made glassy sonics (arpeggiators, vocoders, crispy man-made beats).
The EP title: THE WHITE OF MY EYES. This is a line from a David Bowie song written by Bowie and Iggy Pop called China Girl. Bowie sings, "It's in the white of my eyes!" I love the image of a man losing his mind in another country, sitting in the dark, with his eyelids wide open and all you see is the white of his eyes.
Each song began with a visual concept and then the instruments and structure and sound design were crafted around that concept. Example: Merry Go Round is a song about a girl who thinks she's gonna escape town on wild horses and realizes she's on a Merry Go Round running into the ground and then horses are plastic. It's a song about addiction. So a cyclical 3/4 marching band beat was chosen along with creepy toy sounds and a dizzy chorus effect on the vox.
The tunes were recorded at a 100 year old mansion in Hudson NY called DioramaLand, a house that belonged to a crazy old man who was a mad artist and collector of dolls, war paraphenalia, boats in bottles...etc. The man passed away and Steve Durand, my co-producer, bought it with all the historical artifcats still in it. The place is an inspirational nut house. Thank you Steve.
